Meet A Securi Care Stoma Care Nurse Michelle Hill From Leicester Royal Infirmary

Stoma care nurse name: Michelle Hill

Hospital Base: Leicester Royal Infirmary – Adult and Paediatrics.

How long have you been a stoma care nurse? I have worked in an adult stoma care nurse role for almost 5 ½ years, then I also became interested in paediatric stoma care (for children) in early 2014. Paediatric stoma care is very different as it involves looking after all age ranges, from babies to teenagers, and requires me to provide support in a very different way than I do for adults.

Have you always worked in stoma care? No, before becoming a stoma care nurse I worked within the colorectal area in both a day ward setting and within an acute setting. I really enjoyed this area so, when the chance to become a stoma care nurse became available, I decided this was a path I would like to follow.

Are there any current stoma care projects that you are working on? I designed a poster for use in a paediatric setting called “Lending a hand for little ones with a leak”. My poster was designed as part of an interesting course which I completed at Birmingham University, about Stoma Care and Continence in Paediatrics where I gained knowledge which I was able to bring back into the hospital setting. I now hope to use my poster on the paediatric wards in the hospital and also present it at the Association of Stoma Care Nurses (ASCN) conference in September 2016. I would also like to design a leaflet, based on the poster, for parents to use.

What do you enjoy most about working as a stoma care nurse? I find my role as a stoma care nurse very rewarding, especially the fact that I get to meet lots of people.

Is Michelle your stoma care nurse? Why not give her a shout-out in the comments! Look out for profiles of many of our other stoma care nurses, coming soon on the SecuriCare blog.
