Ollie's Story

Ollie was only 17 when he had an ileostomy.  Here he tells us something of his experiences and triumphs - including a website he has set up for fellow ‘youngens’

“Since being diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis in 2004 I have spent quite a bit of time in hospital with operations and stuff.  The first op came along quite quickly and left me with an ileostomy. Being 17, I was horrified so jumped at the chance of reversing the ileostomy by having a pouch, which they did after a few months recovery.   In this case, it was more trouble than it was worth, but
the thought that I could get rid of the ileostomy kept me pushing through another 6 operations but it never worked and I ended up back at stage one, with an ileostomy (and slightly less horrified).

That was the hard stuff over and done with, and it’s not all doom, gloom and morphine - throughout the ops I managed to make the most of the opportunity to be lazy, play on the playstation and have breakfast in bed, but also continued working most of the time.  I kept up a career in the leisure
industry as a manager and a lifeguard trainer and loved every minute!

I left leisure after a while, but keep my hand
in lifeguarding as much as possible. Following
a couple of months off after operation number seven, I started back at work in the ambulance service, as a call taker, and the police force, as a police officer.
