Colorectal Team Manager - Midlands


The Colorectal Team Leader will support the Nurse Manager Midlands by delivering Colorectal Nursing Services to the University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust in line with the Service Specification outlined in the KPI document December 2023.

The key purpose of the role is managing and co-ordinating a team of Colorectal Cancer Nurses by providing professional leadership whilst undertaking any required clinical work deemed necessary in order to meet our clinical contractual obligations. You will provide supervision and coaching to the team, demonstrating leadership expertise in planning, motivation, co-ordination and commercial awareness. Providing short term and long term planning for service delivery and training.

You will show a commercial knowledge of the impact of external factors and competitor activity on our business, whilst supporting the Unit Nurse Manager in developing and implementing strategic plans which form part of our overall clinical services strategy.

Team Management Responsibilities

  • Monitor and evaluate performance against agreed KPI’s
  • Undertake responsibility for coaching best practice
  • Co-ordinate the planning, organising, and implementation of team objectives
  • Plan, organise and implement team meetings
  • Facilitate organisation wide communication alongside Nurse Manager
  • Perform annual professional development planning
  • Co-ordinate personal & professional development and training needs of staff & ultimately take responsibility for appropriate budgets
  • Participate in selection and interview and induction process
  • Maintain current NHS contracts and established key opinion leaders’ relationships
  • Attend KOL meetings with Senior Management
  • Recruitment:
  • Lead in the first interview and feedback to Unit Manager/HR suitability for 2nd interview
  • Co-ordinate and lead the induction process

Colorectal Team Manager Responsibilities

  • Ensure smooth running of day to day activities within the hospital and community including: Colorectal unit cover, annual leave, and rota planning.
  • Ensure Fast track protocol is adhered to.
  • Understanding of the Clinical Governance Agenda
  • Coaching and mentoring of new starters, responsibility for signing off Clinical Skills Assessment (CSA) in discussion with mentor
  • Participate in induction review and planning role development
  • Responsible for interim reviews with team at 3 and 6 months: flag any issues/concerns to NM
  • In conjunction or absence of Unit Manager, complete annual Performance Development Reviews (PDR’s) for team after appropriate training

Strategic objectives:

  • Be conversant with monthly figures and report back to UHL Trust on respective KPI’s and take ownership of communicating to team in absence of Unit Manager
  • Contribute to the success of the organisation by supporting business strategy and understanding the commercial aspects of the business
  • Be conversant with company’s policies and conditions
  • Participate and plan to ensure clinical and business competencies are met: flag any concerns to Unit Manager (UM)
  • Be aware of Unit Budgets with particular reference to appropriate use of samples within the team
  • To participate in regional meetings with Nurse Manager to plan local strategy in line with meeting the business strategy
  • Where appropriate attend/organise meetings with KOL’s to ensure timely feedback to UM
  • More presence/involvement at National Nurse Meetings to include being Chair and presenting

  • Registered Nurse Qualification
  • NMC Registered
  • Commercial awareness
  • Demonstrate evidence of ability to learn at degree level
  • Colorectal or Stoma background (or specialist knowledge in the care of the colorectal surgical patient)
  • Excellent communication skills, good networker and rapport builder
  • Flexible to meet patient and service needs
  • Ability to plan, implement and manage own time effectively
  • Ability to interrogate data and formulate advice, plans of action and reports
  • Dynamic, forward thinking and able to influence others
  • Determination to progress professionally in Stoma Colorectal nursing
  • Confidence to present a positive image of self and the Company
  • Able to manage and influence other members of the team
  • Flexible to meet patient and service needs
  • IT skills, including excel
  • Confident to take on responsibility and make decisions for the team
  • Ability to delegate responsibility fairly throughout the team
