Ostomates Can Be Glamorous Too

Ostomates Can Be Glamorous Too

Proof that ostomates can be glamorous too

April 9th was the #GetYourBellyOut awareness and fundraising group’s second birthday ball. I am still working on getting my confidence back on the social scene, so I was struck more than anything by how comfortable and welcoming this event was.

But on to the subject of glamour! As anyone who attended this event will testify, it certainly was a room full of glamour! Dapper suits and ball gowns in abundance....so good to see!

As I progress on my own journey with 'Tony' my stoma, the more I interact with the “Belly Community” (the #GetYourBellyOut group refer to their supporters as “Bellies”). In doing so, the more I realise how full this community is of brave people, who are also very glamorous. In the past two years I have seen so many bellies on show in bikinis and boxer shorts. Whether you love or hate this approach, I personally think it is very inspirational; it is all about proving that an ostomy bag does not stop you looking good and that we have no reason to hide our bodies away. It has made me even more determined to do the bikini shoot I’m training so hard for!

Getting prepared for my photo shoot

I have been a little bit worried about this photo shoot because ‘Tony’ is just above my hip bone. As I get fitter and change shape, I’m not completely sure how this will work but the flange on my Aura Flushable bag has been amazing so far in accommodating my uneven shape.

I recently had a bikini wax for the first time in years. Really, when you think about it, an ostomate’s summer preparation should be no different to anybody else’s. Waxing, pedicures etc. are great ways of making us feel good. Why not have a friend around and have a pamper evening if pennies are tight?

When it comes to looking good in swimwear, I’m a firm believer that abs and legs are essential workouts…they are the parts we can take ownership for and change if we want to improve them. Scars and stomas are just part of our journey so we should wear them with pride. It would be great to hear from any bellies out there about your swimming cozzie preferences; I’m always open to ideas.

Let's make the summer rock!

Sounds like you have been through a lot. Well done for not allowing yourself to become a victim and trying to make the best of your life. You are a good example of getting your life back on track despite having so much to deal with. Respect.
