Meet A Securi Care Stoma Care Nurse Lisa Savage From Leicester Royal Infirmary

Stoma Care Nurse Name: Lisa Savage

Hospital Base: Leicester Royal Infirmary

Have you always wanted to be a nurse? I started my nursing career purely by chance. A post with the Leicester Community Night Nursing service became available just as I was starting to look for work after having my son. I was able to make the hours work around my family and I’d previously worked as a carer and found it was something I enjoyed, so thought I’d give it a try. Over the last 20-something years, my nursing career has evolved, leading me to where I am today.

What made you decide to specialise in stoma care? Over the years, I took on various other community nursing auxiliary roles, before finally going off to do my nurse training as a ‘mature student’.

Once qualified, I became a community nurse working in the city and took on the role of tissue viability link nurse, which raised my interest in specialising in just one aspect of nursing. So, 6 months ago, I took a chance, applied, interviewed and gained the role of stoma care nurse.

What do you enjoy most about your job? We support patients after their stoma formation, preparing them for home. I am enthusiastic about learning from a very experienced team who have welcomed me with open arms.

What do you enjoy doing in your spare time? Away from work, I like to spend time with my family and friends. We are often found enjoying time away in our caravans. I also enjoy time outside, walking, games, barbeques and the occasional glass of wine.
